Could Christian Ponder Be The #3 QB This Year?

August 22, 2011 by Nick in Vikings Rookies
It looks like the lockout has done more damage than most Vikings fans had originally thought.  Christian Ponder in two pre-season games hasn’t looked that sharp.  By no means does this mean that Ponder is a ‘bust’ or that we wasted a draft pick on him.  However, I think  a lot of fans were extremely upset when the Vikings organization reached out to Washington in order to make a deal happen with Donovan McNabb.  McNabb may not have thrown a TD pass this pre-season yet but he certainly looks good in this offense.  He’s clearly taking a leadership role and he seems to fit in well with the other players.

With McNabb the clear cut starter, Joe Webb and Christian Ponder will continue to battle it out for the #2 and #3 QB spot.   As of right now, it doesn’t look likely that Ponder will do anything but hold the clip board this season.   Ponder is taking the right attitude and just focusing on improving his play.

“I think my No. 1 goal is to do better than I did last week,” said Ponder, the 12th overall pick in the NFL draft. “I think I’m comfortable after going through last week and getting that experience under my belt. It’s going to be fun, and I’m going to enjoy it. I’ve got to learn from my mistakes last week and get better and make some more plays.”

In Ponders most recent game against Seattle he showed some mixed play.  At times he looked completely lost.  You can probably attribute that to the lockout and the learning curve of the NFL’s most difficult position.  However, at times he looked fantastic.  He wasn’t always panicking and he even at times stepped up to the defensive pressure and delivered a nice throw to the receiver.  Consistency his Ponder’s biggest issue at this time, but one would expect that of a rookie QB who hasn’t had a lot of time to practice.

Who do you guys think will be the backup and third QB this year?

I think Christian Ponder will be the number two. While Pinder hasn’t looked too sharp yet, neither has Joe Webb. There is no way the fan base would be okay with Webb starting over Ponder if something happened to Donovan McNabb. We picked Ponder too high for him to be working with the threes.

Hopefully McNabb stays healthy and we don’t have to worry about any backups playing much. I think Webbs advantage is simply having experience in the NFL, not so much that he’s ‘better’.

I agree with Cha Chi. Ponder was drafted first for a reason, and if McNabb goes down we’ll see Ponder play. Unless we have a winning record, Joe Webb would probably be the best option there, playing a few games last season.

I definitely think Ponder was drafted as our QB of the future. I just think he’s having difficulties in the pro game. He definitely has shown flashes of greatness. I’m not worried about him not being the answer, I just think he may hold the clip board for a little longer then most hope. Ala Aaron Rodgers.
